Your Guide to a Great UK Roadtrip |

A road trip across the UK can be a great way to see and explore more of the country, but it can take a little bit of planning – unless of course you love the feeling of uncertainty and spontaneity. Time spent on the road, traversing across beautiful countryside with great friends can make for some great memories to last a lifetime. To make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible we have put together a few helpful tips. The Destination Normally the destination is what sparks the idea of a road trip in the first place. For example, a dream to explore the highlands leads you and your friends to talking about all going on a trip together. Once you and those travelling with you have decided on the main travel destination, try to come up with a few places along the way that you would all like to see. Having a few places in mind will help you better plan your trip – but remember to allow some time in your plan to go off the beaten track and explore interesting locations which come up along the way. Agree on the DJ As petty as it might sound, many a road trip is ruined over arguments over who is choosing the soundtrack and who keeps changing the song. Try to come up with an agreed upon playlist before you set out to avoid any arguments and keep everyone happy. Spotify is a great place for everyone to easily edit and add to a playlist on the go. Agree on the Budget Not everyone will want to do the same thing, nor will it be likely that everyone has the same budget. Deciding how much everyone wants to/is able to spend before the trip will help avoid any arguments over money. Key questions to raise before you set off are: what kind of hotel does everyone want to stay in at night? How much is everyone willing to spend on food? Is everyone putting money towards the fuel budget? Car Preparation Is someone choosing to drive their own car or have you all decided to rent a vehicle? If you are deciding to take your own car, you will want to make sure it has had its complete MOT and is in proper working order – that is fit for long journeys and country roads. Nothing will bring a halt, both figuratively and literally, to your trip like a breakdown at the side of the road. Give your car a good clean before you start your journey – it might not bother you that your car is cluttered but your friends will probably think differently. It can be a good idea to bring a small tank of petrol with you for emergencies, make sure you have the car manual to hand, you have a spare set of keys, a torch in case you get stuck in the night and make sure you are properly insured and covered should something go wrong. Pack Smartly If there are a few of you travelling you will want to pack smartly to save yourselves having loads of luggage that takes up valuable space. Packing collaboratively can be a good idea to avoid taking many of the same items – like shampoo and hairdryers. Try to avoid placing your luggage on the roof of the car as this will slow the car down, making the trip more expensive, and can be difficult to properly secure.
