When you were a wee child, what kind of toys did you play with? Wooden blocks, toy vehicles, a stick and stones? If the last option was your choice you must have been born at a much earlier date than what we have in mind or you must have had quite the imagination to be able to play so well with it. Or maybe, you just prefer playing outside, plain and simple. But out of all those toys you played with as a young child of the 50s to 90s, what toys survived all those years of innovations and managed to stand the test of time? 1. Jigsaw Puzzle The oldest of the three types of classic toys we’ll be discussing here today is the modest jigsaw puzzle. The earliest known existence of this toy can be traced back to the 1760s. Back then, European mapmakers would paste maps onto wood which would then be cut into smaller pieces. Unlike typical toys that only provide fun but with not much value elsewhere to children, jigsaw puzzles are viewed to be educational toys as they provide both fun and learning opportunities to children. The jigsaw puzzles of today have certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings for now you can find various types of jigsaw puzzles in the market from three dimensional jigsaw puzzles to cardboard jigsaw puzzles and even custom-made puzzles. 2. Barbie Did you know that Barbie is actually more than 60 years old? We kid you not for this beloved childhood toy of many girls, young and old as well as some boys has been around the toy block for more than six decades. That’s an awfully long time for a doll that looks as modern as Barbie. But back when it was first introduced to the toy market, Barbie had a completely different look about her as the original Barbie was fashioned from Bild Lilli, a German doll that was based on a German comic strip character. Today, the range of Barbie dolls has grown to such an extent that the characters of the dolls cover various races and occupations. 3. Polly Pocket Though not as old as jigsaw puzzles or Barbie, Polly Pockets are still considered to be a classic childhood toy of the 90s. First invented in 1983 by a father who just wanted to have a compact-sized doll for his daughter to play with, it was then later on made available everywhere in the 1990s. The original Polly Pockets were small enough to fit pockets but as the years progressed so did the look and size of the toy. Today’s Polly Pockets though arguably larger in size are still considered to be a compact toy that can easily be brought along for travels.
