An international open ended design competition was called on with the NSW Government in 1956 which appointed a jury which provided a brief that made up of broad specifications, that has been intended to attract the top design talent globally; these specifications did not incorporate a cost limit or design parameters. The brief stipulated the design should be two performance halls, one for symphony concerts then one for opera. Thousands of people worldwide submitted submissions that most were discarded and the winning entry was Jorn Utzon from Denmark. อ้าน โดจิน commissioned Jorn as the sole architect. An innovative and collaborative environment approach was adopted to construct the dwelling which developed a close construction and design intervention. It took eight years to finish the structure and construction of the shell structure alone and took another 3 years to produce the special ceramic tiles. The most challenging engineering tasks ever attempted were the construction in the shells. And the structure and concept also demanded exceptional building and engineering strategy. The outfit, roof shells and interior structure was constructed by Baulderstone Hornibrook. The opera hall was then changed into a concert hall, as ABC managed the symphony concerts then ones drew larger audiences than opera did. Utzon resigned in 1966 because of a change of government and populist criticism, professional controversy and street demonstrations. Ted Farmer a new architect went onto completing the interiors and glass walls and in addition went to adding three venues that were unplanned on the western side within the concert hall. In 1973 Queen Elizabeth II opened the Sydney Opera House. Under the supervision from the NSW Government architect, new construction was undertaken by Andrew Anderson between 1986 and 1988 using the forecourt and land approach.
