Ranking the best of any sport is never an easy task. The result will always be subjective and opinion able, regardless of the criteria used and who does it. We have tried to define the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters in history simply according to our personal tastes, without trying to make a final classification, or anything similar. For various reasons, we have decided to take into account exclusively the time spanning from the first IBJJF World Championship to the present. Roger Gracie Roger Gracie was born in 1981 in Brazil. Grandson of Carlos Gracie, the man considered the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, together with Helio Gracie. Like all members of the Gracie family, he became familiar with the tatami at a very young age, under the supervision of his uncles Carlos Gracie Jr and his cousin Renzo Gracie. Winner of 10 world titles and a double victory, weight and absolute, in the ADCC 2005, Roger Gracie is undoubtedly a reference in our sport. Marcelo Garcia Marcelo Garcia was born in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1983. He moved very young to Sao Paulo to train with Terere and Leo Vieira, two BJJ legends, until he accepted Fabio Gurgel's invitation to work as an instructor at Alliance. 4 times ADCC champion at -77 kg and 5 times world champion at -82 kg, he became famous for his guillotines and his X-guard and butterfly sets. In 2009 he opened his own academy in New York, Marcelo Garcia Academy, one of the most famous and successful schools in the world of Jiu Jitsu. Rafael Mendes Rafael Mendes was born in the state of Sao Paulo in 1989. He started practicing BJJ when he was 13 years old, together with his brother Guilherme Mendes, with maestro Ramon Lemos, one of the founders of the Atos team. Winner of 6 world titles and 2 ADCC, "Rafa" is undoubtedly one of the most technical fighters in the history of Jiu Jitsu. Together with Ruben Charles “Cobrinha” is considered the king of the Feather Weight category. He currently owns, together with his brother, the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in Costa Mesa, California. Probably the school with the most young talents in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene. Marcus Almeida “Buchecha” Marcus Almeida, better known in our world as “Buchecha” was born in 1990 in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Rodrigo Cavaca's black belt and member of the Checkmat team. 13 times IBJJF world champion of which 6 of them, won in the Absolute category and 2 times No Gi and ADCC world champion. Marcus Almeida is defined by many Jiu Jitsu fans as the GOAT of our sport. Gordon Ryan Gordon Ryan was born in 1995 in New Jersey, United States. Represents the DDS, graduated to black belt by Garry Tonon in 2015, currently trains with one of the most famous and controversial coaches of our time, John Danaher. His game oriented to always looking for the finish and his tremendous attacks on his legs, have led him to win 3 times the ADCC and 2 titles, weight and absolute, in the last IBJJF No Gi World Cup in 2018. Without a doubt, we can consider Gordon Ryan as one of the most influential fighters of the last two or three years and one of the key players in the recent evolution of BJJ.
