Have you ever been to Fort Worth, or even Fort Stockton, and thought, "Dang, this town doesn't have any first-round picks this year?" You couldn't be more wrong. This is one city that always seems to be loaded with NFL draft picks, and every year it seems like there are at least a handful of really good college athletes that go in the second or third round. So, what makes for a great first-round pick here in Texas?
First, you need a corner, and Fort Worth has plenty of those. Second, you need a running back, and Fort Winton has that, plus a couple other possibilities at running back, depending on the personnel needing to be moved. They have depth at several different spots, and if they need to move somebody they love out, they can do that. It's always a good gamble to take a chance on the top receiver or quarterback from a program you admire, because those players will always be available when your team needs a receiver or quarterback.
Third, you need an offensive line that can protect for two outs, because Fort Winton is known for using two rushers, a tackle, and a center. That's good protection on the edges, as you don't want to give big time to opposing passers. Fort Winton is known to utilize its two rushers often in sub packages, when the opposing team has a running back to the outside. The two rushers can bull the ball down and help keep the pocket clean.
Fourth, you have a running back that can add some power to an already powerful offensive line. sixth, there are some decent inside threats at running back, and you need to be able to stop the run on passing downs. Seventh, the secondary is also loaded with talent, including corners, safeties, and nickelbacks. You may be worried about some of the freshmen this season like Braxton Kelley and Trace McSally, but they will develop into stars, and the passing defense is going to be top notch.
So is there room for hope? Sure, there is room for hope, and I believe Fort Worth Steaks has as much potential as any high school football program. The recent recruits show great promise, and the current players are up for the challenge. Coach Earles Smart has been solid, and has found a few gems on some young receivers. He's also signed many high school athletes that have become solid contributors on the field and on the recruiting trail.
Last year's defensive line was average to below average, which helped limit my opportunities to score during the season. This year's defensive line is better, and should be even better. The secondary is better, and I expect more out of Braxton Kelley and Trace McSally. If this team does as well as last year's team, it will be tough for anybody to take them for a ride this year. Fort Worth Steaks has more chances to make an early upset this year than most teams do.
