Dr. Rohit Varma is recognized nationally as one of the foremost glaucoma specialists in Southern California. He has pioneered novel surgical approaches to this often-blinding condition, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He focuses on the advanced medical and surgical management of all types of glaucoma ranging from congenital to traumatic. Dr. Rohit Varma utilizes the latest technology for early diagnosis and disease monitoring, and offers a full range of treatments for all stages in the disease process. A medical doctor, Dr. Rohit Varma is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California – Keck School of Medicine. He completed a Residency in Ophthalmology at the prestigious University of Illinois at Chicago Eye Institute and completed fellowships in Advanced Medical and Surgical Glaucoma Management and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery. He also has an MPH degree from USC School of Public Health.
The causes of ocular disease, his primary research focuses on epidemiologic studies of eye disease in children and aging populations. He is principal investigator of several National Institute of Health-funded studies, including the African American Eye Disease Study and the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study. Dr. Rohit Varma is professor of clinical ophthalmology and preventive medicine at Keck School of Medicine of USC. His epidemiological studies have significantly impacted health care policy and have allowed for a deeper understanding of how disease affects different populations. Most recently, Rohit Varma has been involved in the development of novel implantable intraocular pressure sensors and drainage devices. His work is geared toward slowing vision loss, reducing blindness, and improving quality of life for millions of people worldwide Rohit Varma, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., is a professor of epidemiology and medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and the site principal investigator for research on blindness and vision impairment for the World Health Organization (WHO). He has been conducting studies of vision loss in populations in India and Africa since 2002 and previously evaluated vision impairment rates among older people living in a rural community in Nigeria for a decade. Dr. Varma has authored or co-authored more than 275 journal articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited or authored three books. He serves on the Institute of Medicines Roundtable on Health Disparities and served on the board of the Scientific Counselors of the National Eye Institute, and holds a master's degree in public health from J.Hopkins School of Public Health. Dr. Varma's academic distinction has been recognized by prestigious awards: The Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Secretariat Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has received honorary doctorates from Thomas Jefferson University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and was named Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1992. A leading researcher and clinician, Rohit Varma has dedicated himself to helping individuals with eye disease. His research includes several areas of clinical concern, including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Most recently, Dr. Varma was named an ARVO Gold Fellow for exemplary contributions and dedication to vision science research and mentorship. Rohit Varma, MD, PhD, is a clinical professor of ophthalmology and preventive medicine as well as the Grace and Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He served as dean of the Keck School from 2002 to 2008, was president and chair-elect of the USC Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2007, and has been president and chair of the Board of Directors of USC Care (now the USC University Hospital) since 1996. Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, Rohit Varma also serves as Executive Vice Dean for Strategic Planning and Community Network Development. A former chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keck School – which has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top ophthalmology departments in the country – Dr. Varma is chief executive of a busy practice while spearheading new faculty development initiatives and overseeing digital learning strategies for medical education.
Rohit Varma, MD is the Young Endowed Chair of Ocular Research at the Wisconsin Medical Foundation in Madison. He has published dozens of research papers and book chapters, delivered lectures worldwide, and served on many local charitable fund committees. Dr. Rohit Varma recently received a four-year appointment as associate dean of strategic planning for this esteemed medical school. He completed two glaucoma fellowships, one at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and the other at Keck School of Medicine of USC. A native of India, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Delhi.
