The Afghan Hound is easily recognizable by its long silky thick fine coat with little curls on the end. It gets its name as it needs to be selectively bred in the cold Afghanistan mountains for its features. The Afghan hound is undoubtedly the best show dog and a great pet all around. Grooming Afghan Hound dogs is a full-time job as their long hairs need brushing for a few hours every week to avoid matting and tangles. Proper care all around is necessary to maintain the clean, healthy and glamour of the Afghan Hound. Grooming Needs Afghan Hounds are highly intelligent dogs and need training early on to have better control of them or they become stubborn, especially when brushing their coats. Daily grooming needs, start with grooming spray to moisten the coat before brushing. Note that an Afghan Hounds coat should never be brushed when dry as the hairs will be damaged since they are sensitive and will easily break off. Invest in good oval pin brush to brush large parts at a time and still do it gently to help it detangle and get fluffy. The dog needs constant eye-level contact when grooming takes place and it's necessary to get a dedicated high table on which the Hound will rest when brushing. Bathing The Afghan hound needs to bathe once a week to avoid tangling of the hair that leads to matting. Hounds for the show need to be bathed twice to keep the coats healthy, shiny, and glamorous. Since it has long hair, it easily gets dirty and a good shampoo is necessary. A raised tub with a hand sprayer or a pump shampooer will ensure that the shampoo gets evenly distributed on the coat and skin. When doing the work by hand, work part by part to ensure the shampoo is worked into the new growing hairs. When rinsing, ensure that the water runs clear before drying it off. For great fluffy hairs, invest in a cream rinse, and application should be done following the pattern of how the hair is growing to avoid rubbing as it tangles the coat. When the dog is matted, start the de-matting process by heavily conditioning the coat after shampooing. Grooming is vital every two days to remove every loose hair as the reconditioning will work to treat the damaged goat. Drying The Afghan hound can drip on towels for not less than 30 minutes before blow drying it out for pets. If the dog has curly coats at its ends, blow-dry when wet while concentrating on the curly areas first. Concentration is placed on the most curled parts such as the chest, back, front legs, and neck. When blow-drying, do it in the direction most attractive every time to have it naturally falling in that position with time. Dry from the head to offer relief to the dog from the wetness. Oils Refreshing the Afghan Hounds coat every day in cold weather will keep the coat healthy. Moistening with a grooming spray before brushing will make it easy to manage. Apply oils in parts before wrapping the hairs in hair bands in the direction it naturally falls before clipping. Brush each section before bundling similarly before completion. When experimenting with oils, consider hound oils work differently with different dogs as some need heavier oils than others. The oil amount needed also varies depending on the conditioning done as the more conditioned the dog is the more unlikely it needs oils. Remember to remove all clips before giving one overall brush to avoid the clips breaking and pulling on the coat. Grooming the Afghan Hounds nails is a little challenging due to the hairs. Be creative and keep the hairs away using Hound socks where the nails stick out, keeping the hairs away. Roll it carefully on each leg, getting one toe at a time to keep safe since hounds are stubborn.
