If you plan to hike in colder weather, you have to use several levels of clothing to be sure that your body will remain warm and dry throughout the entire trip.
Hikers usually use three different layers of clothing when backpacking in areas with snow and freezing temperatures.
Lets see them in detail.
For temperatures up to 14°F (-10°C)
The garments for the moderately cold weather will mainly consist of 90% synthetics and about 10% animal fibers.
Synthetics will be used as base layers, and the animal furs and fabrics as external layers.
You can make an exception if you want, and use merino wool for the base layer. Merino wool acts more like polypropylene being an anti-microbial material that is thin and soft, warm and comfortable, quick drying and durable.
The Upper body
The outer layer will consist of a thicker, heavy-duty sweater or a jacket with a windbreaker exterior.
Outdoorequipped.com is an online store providing clothing, footwear and gear for outdoor activities.
For head protection, a thin skull cap or a beanie will be just enough to provide some cover to your ears and scalp.
To protect your eyes from the sunlight you can use standard sunglasses.
The gloves used in this case will be thin gloves (tight-fitting thin gloves), which will allow for a lot of nano dexterity and fine finger movements, but less warmth.
However, if you care more for your comfort and you think that your hands can freeze, you can use thicker gloves even if they will reduce the mobility of your fingers.
The Lower Body
For the lower body, a similar polypropylene base layer can be used because being made of a polyester spandex blend, will last a pretty long time and will allow your legs to be very flexible.
These synthetic materials last much longer than cotton, and are ideal for survival situations.
Cotton is not indicated because once wet, it loses most of its insulating properties and is really hard to dry.
If you choose polypropylene, you will get a material that dries very quickly and is very durable (it will last a long time).
For the outer layer you can choose any pair of standard pants for hiking such the lightweight tactial pants.
If you plan to do a more aggressive work, you can move up to heavier tactical pants that have built-in knee pads because these are perfect for intense outdoor activities.
To keep your feet warm and dry all the time your have to use socks consisting of up to 70% merino wool, 27% nylon and about 3% lycra.
These socks are seamless, so they are very comfortable and breathable, and they dry very fast.
For your legs always choose antimicrobial materials because their main purpose is to destroy or inhibits the growth of microorganisms.
Being able to prevent bacteria and microorganisms from attaching to the fabric surface, always choose socks made of antimicrobial materials.
Conclusion
Cotton can be only a magnet for bacteria and microorganisms, so try to never use cotton socks when hiking in areas with cold climate.
