The Government of India recently went shopping in the telecom sector.
Beginning with the acquisition of a 35.8% equity stake in Vodafone Idea, it went on to pick another 9.5% stake in Tata Teleservices, a Tata Group company.
Strictly speaking, these acquisitions weren't "shopping" but rather "payments" for the statutory dues owed by these companies - a “debt to equity” swap of sorts.
How is this going to benefit the companies, the Government and most importantly, the telecom sector at large?
