Layers of Fear is reminiscent of Disneyland's Haunted House ride. There you sit in a cart and inspect a mansion inhabited by witches, ghosts and other supernatural creatures. Scary music sounds, holographic projections are circling in the air, rotten hands stick out of the graves, and at the exit it turns out that during the trip you "picked up" an evil spirit that now lives in your body. The attraction, despite all the otherworldly nonsense, is not scary at all. You are not allowed to get off the rails on which they are being carried, and this kills the incipient horror in the bud. There is no risk, no sense of danger, but the pleasure of walking through the "Haunted House" is real. Because what, after all, is there to expect from Disneyland, the “happiest place on earth”? It's another matter when the same safe program is played by horror. In Layers of Fear, in theory, you should be shaken out of your pants, brought to a nervous breakdown and a state of panic, and in the end, put in the same cart as in the "Haunted House", and chased around the mansion for three hours. I'm not kidding about the cart - it is, of course, metaphorical, but you are not even allowed to take a step aside. No free movement through the levels, you can't even go back, because unnecessary doors are immediately locked. The authors of Layers of Fear are even more worried about the player than the employees of "Disneyland" - God forbid you stumble, get confused, do something not according to the script. And you can't even die here. There are no monsters in the game, at least those that could harm the main character not according to the plot. You quickly realize your immunity and start fooling around - there will be no punishment, there is no one to hide from. Despite the horror, you are the master of the situation. In the course of the game, I often remembered Alien: Isolation , which frightened with its unpredictability, unscripted Alien, who overtook anywhere. This created a feeling of constant danger, I wanted to look around and listen attentively to the darkness of the space station corridors. Can't you hear the grinding of claws on the metal floor? Forget it, Layers of Fear won't offer you anything as exciting. The authors are much better at staged situations and work with the environment. The game tells the story of a crazy artist, his family and paintings, for the sake of which he sacrificed everything that was dear to him. You reveal the details of the drama unfolding in the old mansion, from scraps of memories you collect the plot, which with each passing hour is more and more fascinating. The mansion also shares its history through the scenery. The sins and mental throwing of the madman distort the levels beyond recognition: empty nurseries with twisted, disfigured dolls, a twisted study that makes you remember the ending of Interstellar, revived pictures bursting into reality. Yes, Layers of Fear fiddles with senseless running around - 90% of the time you wander through the corridors and open doors and doors (it's like playing a Call of Duty spin-off about Captain Price). Yes, the scrimmers here are absolutely vulgar, predictable and stupid, but it is not they who scare you, but the artist's history, the understanding of what he - and you - in the end aspire to. You watch how the idea destroys and reshapes a person, you find yourself inside this twisted mind. And from this, and not from lazy skrimmers, it becomes uncomfortable. Especially in the ending, which turns the game into a polysyllabic metaphor. Layers of Fear has enough flaws: it is not too scary, too linear. But the plot and atmosphere elevate it above other indie horror movies. If you are not ready to spend money on it now, wait for the sale - the game can be an unforgettable experience for you.
