As part of IVF treatment, you can now decide on the gender of your baby. Upon a biopsy of the fertilized eggs, the gender of the embryos can be determined. This method which is known as preimplantation genetic screening does not only allow you to determine the gender of the embryos but also tests for genetic health of the fetuses. Until 2016, gender selection in Cyprus was allowed by law. However, with the enactment of the new regulation in June 2016, gender selection has been abolished. This method of screening is only allowed if there is a genetic disease in the family due to the X chromosome. As any disease present in the X chromosome means gender-related disease, genetic screening including gender becomes a requirement. Gender selection can only be made through IVF treatment Families who are looking to select the gender of their babies can only do this by choosing IVF as their pregnancy method. The first goal is to maximize the number of eggs which can be produced in a given cycle. For this treatment, the patient is referred to a doctor living in her area. There is no need to travel to Cyprus at this initial phase. Once the initial phase is completed several blood tests are carried out to find out the suitability of the patient. If there is no complication in this second phase, the treatment is started on the 2nd or 3rd day of a patient’s cycle which will last about 10 days. A doctor should always supervise the procedure. The last stage of the treatment requires the family to arrive in Cyprus for gender selection process. The needed time in Cyprus for gender selection is on average 1 week. Medicine to be used during this treatment is usually very expensive in overseas countries. So, many families prefer to spend the entire treatment period in Cyprus. The whole procedure lasts about 20 days. Patients can use partner hotels as a less expensive option for their stay. There are specific tests which are required before starting the treatment. These tests are done on the 2nd or 3rd day of a woman’s cycle. FSH, LH, E2, AMH, PRL AS WELL AS TSH, T3, T4, fasting blood glucose, CBC blood test, urea, AST, ALT, HbsAg, Anti-HCV, and HIV are among the tests to be completed. The uterus should also be examined for suitability. For this, either a pelvic ultrasound or HSG scan is required. There are also tests required for the male partner. Male partner should do a spermiogram analysis upon 3 days of abstaining from ejaculation. Furthermore, HBsAg, Anti-HCV and HIV test are also required for the male partner. The first stage of the treatment carried out in Cyprus starts with egg collection. Afterward, sperm cells obtained from the male partner are used to fertilize the eggs randomly. Best quality embryos are chosen from the fertilized embryos on the 3rd day of their development and are screened via PGS method both for health and gender purposes. On the 5th day of development, only the healthy embryos are transferred to the mother’s uterus. Once embryo transfer is completed, pregnancy result can precisely be determined with a blood test days 12 days later. For patients under 35 due to good quality eggs, the probability of getting pregnant through PGS is very high. Upon this treatment, the probability of gender correctness and healthiness is 99.9%. To be successful with gender selection, specific criteria should be considered before starting the treatment. There are many factors which will affect the result such as the age of the patient, her fertility, quality of eggs and the quality of the embryos obtained.
