A treatment that many are hearing about a lot lately is rolfing treatments. While this form of massage has been around for a while, a new light is being shed on it. Many have used rolfing sessions to assist them in their chronic pain. Individuals have had luck with it diminishing their pain, resolving flexibility issues, and providing energy. People that suffer from sciatica or lower back pain have found it to work wonders.
There are ten sessions to a rolfing treatment. Every session will concentrate on a specific part of the body. This holistic method manipulates the fascia and muscles to restore movement in the body. If any places in the body are strained or misaligned, the Rolfer will work over these parts of the body. Anyone that has restricted movement can also have that body part worked on. However, you should note that just because you have pain in one area does not mean that it does not stem from another place on the body.
During a rolfing treatment, you may feel it feels like a deeper massage. In doing this, the entire body is worked over fix not only your posture but also your structure so any issues can be addressed. Rolfing is a safe procedure, but you should talk with your provider about any questions or concerns you may have. Should you be pregnant or have a connective tissue disorder, such as Lupus, or a psychological disorder, rolfing may not be the best treatment for you.
Some people who have had rolfing treatments completed say that rolfing hurts. This is true for many that suffer from chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia. However, after a session has been completed, those individuals may feel great right away or a few days afterward. Do take note that since chronic pain did not start overnight, feeling better will not either. It is advised that for every one year of pain you have been in, one month (4 sessions) of rolfing treatment should be completed. Therefore, a person that has been in chronic pain for 2 years would need to do 2 months of weekly treatment at a minimum.
When having a rolfing treatment done, a person should wear comfortable clothing that will not restrict any movement. Each session will take approximately an hour, but depending on your Rolfer, it may take 2 hours. It is also recommended that a person does not have any other bodywork done during the 10 sessions of rolfing treatment. This includes any type of massage or chiropractic service.
A rolfing treatment should have the ultimate goal of reducing or eliminating pain. Rolfers should ask how you are feeling before the session starts and ask if anything has changed since the last time they worked with you. This allows the Rolfer to address your needs and hone in on what needs to be done for your body. Before the sessions, as well as after, one needs to be hydrated. If you do feel pain after the session, you can use heat or ice and also take an over-the-counter painkiller.
Be sure when looking for a Rolfer to find one that has been properly trained. The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado, is where the individual should be certified in the United States.
