Going to the dentist makes us all nervous. We often think that the issues we have with our teeth are a major event, or something that makes us look particularly disgusting to the dentist himself. However, we are truly making mountains out of mole hills when we feel like we are the worst set of teeth he’s seen this year. Understanding the commonality of the dental procedures can be a great way to ease this anxiety. Crowns, caps, extractions, and fillings are common dental procedures that your dentist sees everyday. A crown is a dental restoration that helps to protect damaged or broken teeth. Fillings and repairs occur when the dentist is able to use restorative materials to repair teeth without the need of crowns. However, tooth extractions are common, and dentures are as well, especially as patients grow older. When you get to the dentist and need any of these procedures, you aren’t alone. Other common dental procedures including braces, bonding, bridges, and implants. Bonding is one of the restorative procedures that helps to repair damaged, decayed or discolored teeth. If you have a tooth gap that you want changed, bonding is a common solution. As well, many people have used braces, typically in childhood or as a teen, to straighten teeth and correct bite-related problems. If you’ve had a tooth extraction, bridges and implants help replace missing teeth or anchor two teeth with one missing between it. While some common procedures are a bit more serious, you should not be embarrassed or feel anxious when the dentist says that it is necessary for your oral health. Gum surgery relieves gum disease, which is a common dental infection affecting the gums and jawbone that may lead to gum or tooth loss. If it gets severe, surgery is necessary. Root canals are another common dental procedure is a root canal, which treats diseases or abscessed teeth. Dentists also see plenty of patients that need cosmetic or non-emergency services. Many patients go to the dentist for professional teeth whitening, or veneers instead of standard dentures or bridges and implants. Veneers are bonded to teeth, more expensive, and more genuine-looking. Being nervous at the dentist is perfectly normal, and it becomes easier knowing you aren’t gross or stick out like a sore tooth. Understanding that cavities, fillings, root canals, and other dental procedures are more common than you’d think makes a dental procedure much easier to undergo.
