This quick read shows how the two main approaches to happiness are seamlessly integrated in Positive Psychology’s PERMA model to create a solid platform for building and maintaining our wellbeing.
Introduction In exploring happiness and wellbeing, we quickly encounter two historical perspectives: the Hedonic and Eudemonic traditions. Originating from ancient Greek philosophers Aristippus and Aristotle respectively in the fourth century BC, their traditions offer distinct approaches to happiness and wellbeing. The Hedonic approach centres on pleasure seeking and pain avoidance, while the Eudemonic tradition emphasises achieving ones’ potential at a deeper level. It is crucial to recognise that the pursuit of pleasure does not always guarantee happiness or wellbeing. Overindulgence in substances like alcohol, drugs, and food may lead to detrimental health consequences. Also, virtuous acts, like acts of courage or dedicated work, may not always result in pleasure.
