Difference Between Autobiography and BiographyMany think that an autobiography is the same as a biography. Because the meaning of autobiography and biography are both reviewing a person's life history, both autobiography and biography. But the reality is different. Autobiography is a life story told by the character himself or assisted by other writers who have asked permission from the character and have a first person point of view. All sources of information are obtained from the character himself, not through other people. While the biography is the life journey of the main character written by other people and using a third person point of view. And sources of biographical information are usually extracted not only from the main character, it can be through friends, family, or rivals of the main character. Usually, biographies mostly contain very well-known characters, in contrast to autobiographies which sometimes only contain someone with the aim of strengthening their own personal branding. That's an outline of the difference between a biography and an autobiography that you need to know. Very similar but different right? One of the types of essays that exist is a biography and an autobiography. Both of these essays are essays that both discuss a person's life, from childhood to the time that someone achieves a success. In addition, these two essays also highlight the positive side behind a person's life. Both can also be said to belong to the categories of non-fiction prose and semi-scientific essays. Although they have similarities, the two types of essays also have a number of fundamental differences. The differences that will be discussed will be discussed specifically in this article, where the discussion is as follows! 1. The Author of the EssayThe first difference inherent in a biography and an autobiography is the author of the essay. In biographical essays, the role of the author of this essay is someone else. That is, the life story of the character that is written in the biography is not written by the character, but by someone else who is paid by the character to write his biography. People who write biographies are usually known as shadow writers or popularly called ghost writers. Meanwhile, in an autobiographical essay, the character who wants to tell the story is the person who is responsible for writing the story of his life. That is, the story of the life of the character that is told in the autobiography is a story written directly by the character himself. In this essay, the character has his own freedom and responsibility for his life story which he wrote in his autobiography. 2. Point of View UsedThe next difference inherent in the biography and autobiography is the point of view used in the essay. From this point of view, it can be said that an autobiographical essay is more objective than an autobiography. This is because the person writing the biography is someone else (not the character whose story is being told), so the point of view used is the third person point of view which tends to be objective. Meanwhile, the point of view used in the autobiography is the first person point of view which tends to be subjective. This is of course because the author of this essay is the character himself. Even so, the character can also use a third person (objective) point of view to write his autobiography. 3. Data Collection ProcessThe last difference between a biography and an autobiography is the process of collecting data on the essay. From this point of view, it can be said that the process of collecting data from autobiographies is relatively shorter than that of biographies. This is because the source of the autobiographical data is directly owned by the author of the autobiography, namely personal experience and a number of supporting documents. Thus, the author of the autobiography only needs to pour all the data sources into an autobiography Meanwhile, the process of collecting biographical data is much longer than autobiography. This is because the biographer must first collect personal documents and transcripts of interviews with the characters before they are included in the biography. The data collection process will take even longer if the character to be told has died. The biographer must interview a number of people closest to the character in order to obtain information about the character's life actions during his life. So, it can be concluded, that there are three basic differences inherent in biography and autobiography, namely the author of the essay, the point of view used, and the process of collecting data.
