What Are Cosmetic Products Made From: Cosmetic Ingredients |

There is a wide variety of cosmetic products available on the market, from powders to liquid eyeliner pens and everything in between. However, despite the seemingly obvious differences between all of these cosmetic products, it often comes as a surprise to learn that many of them share a number of cosmetic ingredients. The cosmetics industry is massive, and with such a wide variety of products available on the market, it might therefore come as something of a surprise to many consumers that the basic ingredients of cosmetics are largely similar to one another. Indeed, a lot of the most popular cosmetic products—which serve vastly different functions and come in a huge selection of colors—actually will have started life as cosmetic ingredients which weren’t so vastly different after all. But what are cosmetic products made from, anyway? Cosmetic Ingredients: A Brief History Of Cosmetic ProductsIn times gone by, many cosmetic products were made from ingredients which many of us might consider to be—at best—questionable, if not outright dangerous. Arguably the most famous of these products and cosmetic ingredients where those which were used to create a pale face—the height of fashion in the Middle Ages in particular, where women (and some men) from aristocratic families would be known to routinely apply white powder and paint to their faces made from lead and arsenic. Toxic metals were, indeed, a highly popular choice of makeup that were sure to have caused far more harm than good for their users.
In more ancient times, cosmetic ingredients and practices were typically somewhat less dangerous for their users. It is known that the ancient Egyptians favored the use of cosmetically products such as eyeliners, particularly for those individuals of wealth, and the Ancient Greeks would use crushed mulberries as a primitive form of red/rouge coloring. Beeswax was sometimes even used as a form of lipstick in some cultures, primarily for the historical populations and civilisations of what is now the Middle East. Modern Cosmetic Ingredients While many questionable practices still occur across the globe in the name of beauty, the makeup and cosmetics industry is now far more regulated than it ever was in the past. Some of the most common ingredients for use in cosmetic products now include oils (in particular castor oils), waxes, perfumes, and dyes. When combined together and prepared in specific ways, these highly similar ingredients can help to create the wide selection of cosmetic products which are available to buy today.
